Indonesia reports 93 percent drop in measles cases since early 2026
“And if we look at the first week of 2026, the number of cases was 2,220. Comparing the first week to the 12th week, we can see a decrease of approximately 93 percent,” the ministry’s Acting Director General of Disease Control Andi Saguni said here on Monday.
He pointed out that there were 14 provinces with high case numbers in 2025-2026, including North Sumatra, Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java. Several provinces, such as North Sumatra and West Sumatra, have now recorded zero cases, while other provinces have also seen declines in cases.
The government has also conducted surveillance in 10 districts and cities with the highest case numbers, including South Tangerang, Tangerang, Bima, Palembang, Pandeglang, West Jakarta, Depok, Palu, Serang, and Central Jakarta.
He said that although a downward trend has been observed in most monitored areas, vigilance must still be maintained.
In addition to surveillance and vaccination, the ministry recently issued a circular to protect healthcare and medical workers from measles.
He also explained follow-up measures in the form of an epidemiological investigation in response to the death of a 25-year-old healthcare worker in Cianjur, West Java, due to measles.
Overall, he said measles cases in Cianjur were lower compared to the 10 highest regions, with a total of 25 suspected cases and nine confirmed cases, and no new cases recorded in the 12th week.
