Indonesia has officially begun its mandate as a member of the United Nations Board of Auditors (UNBoA) for the 2026-2032 period, with the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) taking the seat to strengthen accountability and governance within the world organisation. According to a written statement from the Foreign Ministry on Thursday, the membership handover ceremony took place at UN Headquarters in New York, United States, on 22 July. Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir accompanied BPK Chair Isma Yatun in receiving the mandate. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will consistently enhance synergy and collaboration among institutions to strengthen and expand Indonesia’s leadership and influence in various international forums,” Arrmanatha stated. He explained that the Foreign Ministry, together with the BPK, had conducted diplomacy since 2020 to garner support from UN member states until Indonesia was elected by acclamation in 2025. The Foreign Ministry, through the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia in New York, will continue to support the BPK in carrying out its audit duties of UN bodies during the mandate period. The UNBoA is a three-member board comprising Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) tasked with auditing the financial statements and performance of various UN entities. In addition to conducting external audits, the board provides recommendations to the UN General Assembly to strengthen accountability, transparency, and effectiveness. Indonesia was elected by acclamation as a member of the UNBoA at the Main Session of the Fifth Committee of the UN General Assembly on 7 November 2025, for a six-year term running from July 2026 to June 2032. In this mandate, the BPK replaces the China National Audit Office as the representative for the Asian region and will work alongside the supreme audit institutions of France and Brazil. BPK Chair Isma Yatun stated that Indonesia’s membership in the UNBoA is a recognition of the BPK’s capacity and credibility as an institution that meets international standards. She also expressed appreciation to the UNBoA members for their support during the transition process and emphasised the importance of maintaining independence, continuity, and audit quality to provide added value to the UN and its member states.
