Indonesia regains Putra Cup

TANGERANG, West Java (JP): Playing almost flawless golf, Indonesia carded an 848 total and won the Putra Cup team amateur championship at the par-72 Bumi Serpong Damai course here on Friday.

Sukamdi made it a double for Indonesia when he captured the individual event by one stroke over Singapore's Mardan Mamat. The Indonesian veteran had a four-day total of 279 (66, 72, 72, 69). Mardan' scores were 74, 69, 71, and 66.

The Indonesian team of Sukamdi, Bahtiar, Dana Mahmud and Deny Supriyadi, who had been making the Jack Nicklaus-designed course their 'home ground' months before the event, led wire-to-wire (207, 209, 221, 211).

Along with Sukamdi on the final day, Bahtiar had a 71 (34, 37) and Denny Supriyadi joined him (33, 38).

Denny, who in his debut at the prestigious annual tournament let his youth show after a rules violation on Thursday settled down a bit on Friday.

The 18-year-old went out from the clubhouse with a sparkling three under par. On his way home his aggressive play cost him an outstanding round and he slumped with bogeys at the par-3 11th, par-5 13th and par-4 15th.

After birdies on the next two holes Denny made a bold and dangerous approach at the 18th, playing the ball over a water hazard and sand that most players prefer to avoid. Fortunately his shot landed 10 meters from the pin, and his hole ended with a birdie.

"They have been playing good golf and they deserved the victory," Indonesia Golf Association secretary Taufik Aziz said.

The total score they collected, Aziz added, was the lowest in the 34 year history of the Putra Cup. The previous best score was an 851 produced in 1987 when Indonesia hosted the tournament at the Jakarta Golf Club. The tournament was won by the Philippines over Indonesia by one-stroke.

Golf pundits believe that the victory is a sign that the Indonesian team should play at the Hiroshima Asian Games. The National Olympic Committee (KONI) has made golf a second priority sport for Indonesia at the Asiad.

Six strokes behind the champions was Thailand in second place. The Thais collected a total score of 854 (212, 218, 211, 213), one shot ahead of the Filipinos who finished third. The Filipinos brought home scores of 215, 212, 213, 215.

Sirikit Cup

Dark horse South Korea stole the show at the Sirikit Cup women's team tournament by winning the race over the favored Australian's, champions last year in Perth.

Han Hee-won carded a 1-under par-71 as her teammate Song Chae- eun had an even par 72 to bring a total score of 143 in the third and final round on Friday. A combined 285 (140, 145) on the second day brought them a two-day total of 428 (140, 145, 143).

Three strokes back was Australia at 431 (149, 135, 147). One shot further back was New Zealand at 440 (148, 146 146).

Indonesia, which had expected a top-five finish, was in sixth place at 457 (150, 153 154)(rsl).
