Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the country’s trade balance in January 2026 recorded a surplus of US$0.95 billion, derived from total exports valued at US$22.16 billion and imports of US$21.20 billion.

Ateng Hartono, Deputy for Statistics Distribution and Services at BPS, stated at a press conference in Jakarta that Indonesia’s export performance increased 3.39 per cent year-on-year. Imports, meanwhile, surged more substantially at 18.21 per cent year-on-year.

According to Hartono, the export increase was driven by the non-mineral sector, particularly the manufacturing industry, which recorded export value growth of 8.19 per cent year-on-year, contributing 6.54 per cent to the overall increase.

On the import side, the rise was primarily attributed to non-mineral imports, which contributed 14.4 per cent to total imports overall.

Indonesia has maintained a consistent trade surplus throughout 2025, reflecting resilience in its external sector. The country has now recorded a trade surplus for 68 consecutive months amid uncertain global economic conditions. The trade balance for the January-November 2025 period recorded a significant surplus of US$38.54 billion, equivalent to Rp645.7 trillion.

Trade Minister Budi Santoso has assured that Indonesia’s trade balance will not narrow as a result of reciprocal tariff agreements with the United States.
