Indonesia Reaffirms Support for Peace in Myanmar

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has expressed Indonesia’s commitment to supporting inclusive and sustainable peace in Myanmar during a courtesy visit to Myanmar’s President, Min Aung Hlaing. During the meeting in Naypyidaw, Sugiono conveyed a message from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, reaffirming Indonesia’s support for efforts to resolve conflict and ensure stability in Myanmar.

“Indonesia is ready to cooperate with all stakeholders in Myanmar to achieve dialogue for a peaceful resolution to the conflict,” Sugiono stated in a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday. Indonesia also emphasised its conviction that the peace process must be owned and led by Myanmar itself.

Furthermore, Indonesia stressed the importance of implementing the Five-Point Consensus as the shared ASEAN framework for addressing the situation in Myanmar. In addition to meeting Hlaing, Sugiono held discussions with Myanmar’s Foreign Minister, U Tin Maung Swe. The two ministers addressed various bilateral and regional issues, including opportunities to strengthen cooperation in the fields of economy, education, and people-to-people relations.

For Indonesia, Myanmar is an integral part of the ASEAN family; therefore, Indonesia will continue to work constructively with Myanmar and other ASEAN member states. Sugiono’s visit is part of the ongoing engagement by ASEAN nations to support peace and stability in Myanmar. Previously, the Foreign Ministers of the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia have also visited Myanmar to promote similar efforts. Indonesia and Myanmar have maintained diplomatic relations since 1949, and both nations were pioneers of the 1955 Asian-African Conference (KAA), which strengthened solidarity and cooperation among developing nations.
