Indonesia ranks second in GMTI 2026
The Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2026 has announced that Indonesia is ranked second as a Muslim-friendly tourist destination. “Indonesia has successfully improved from fifth last year to second this year. We are optimistic about securing our position as the top global Muslim destination next year,” said Bayu Aji, Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, during the GMTI 2026 awards event followed online in Jakarta on Thursday. Indonesia’s position rose three places from the previous year’s fifth place. This year’s ranking places Indonesia directly below Malaysia, alongside Saudi Arabia and Turkey. “I would also like to thank our team for their tremendous hard work and dedication,” added Bayu Aji. Fazal Bahardeen, Founder and CEO of CrescentRating HalalTrip, said that Indonesia is one of the countries that continues to grow as a leading multicultural destination, offering rich spiritual experiences and stunning natural beauty for Muslim travellers. Indonesia combines faith-based needs with attractive leisure offerings. Halal-certified food also provides peace of mind for travellers, along with clean prayer facilities at airports, shopping centres, and public spaces. The organisers also assessed that Indonesia consistently ensures a very safe, comfortable, and welcoming experience for all Muslim visitors. On the same occasion, West Java also received the ‘Most Promising Muslim-Friendly Region of the Year’ award for this year.
