Indonesia Ranks Fourth in ASEAN for Diabetes Prevalence

Indonesia has the fourth-highest prevalence of diabetes in the ASEAN region, according to data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) 2024. The prevalence rate in Indonesia stands at 11.3%, placing it behind Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, and Singapore. Malaysia has the highest prevalence in the region at 21.1%, meaning roughly one in five adults in the country lives with diabetes. Brunei Darussalam is second with 13.7%, followed by Singapore at 11.4%. Indonesia is in fourth place with 11.3%, just slightly behind Singapore. Following Indonesia are Thailand with a prevalence of 10.2%, the Philippines and Cambodia both at 7.5%, Laos and Myanmar at 6.7%, Vietnam at 3.4%, and Timor-Leste at 3.2%. The IDF estimates that approximately 20.4 million adults aged 20-79 in Indonesia were living with diabetes in 2024. The high prevalence serves as a reminder of the importance of early detection, regular health check-ups, and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of future complications.
