Indonesia Ranks Fifth in ASEAN for Obesity Rates
Indonesia has the fifth highest obesity rate in Southeast Asia, with a prevalence of 11.52%, according to the latest data from the World Obesity Federation’s Global Obesity Observatory. Brunei Darussalam tops the list with 32.09%, making it the only ASEAN nation exceeding 30%. Malaysia follows in second place at 22.41%, with Thailand at 15.44% and Singapore at 13.97%. Indonesia’s rate is higher than the Philippines (8.96%), Laos (8.32%), Myanmar (7.71%), Cambodia (4.50%), Timor-Leste (2.41%), and Vietnam (2.04%). The figures underscore significant health challenges across the region, with the World Obesity Federation identifying obesity as a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers. The data reinforces the importance of preventive measures including balanced nutrition, increased physical activity, and public health education to address the rising trend.
