Indonesia pushes for public protection in AI development
He stated that AI must be controlled to protect society, democracy, and the digital public space.
In his statement on Tuesday (May 26), he said that Indonesia is pushing for the development of an AI ecosystem that fosters innovation while protecting social values and democratic principles.
“For us, responsible AI means strengthening AI literacy so society and the workforce are ready to face this transformation, with the principle of leaving no one behind,” Patria noted.
AI development is now occurring at a rapid pace and giving rise to new challenges related to security, ethics, governance, disinformation and the concentration of technological power. This is reflected in the International AI Safety Report 2026, compiled by more than 100 AI experts and supported by more than 30 countries, including Indonesia.
“AI is developing rapidly around the world, bringing not only enormous opportunities but also serious questions regarding security, ethics, governance and public trust. The release of the International AI Safety Report 2026 further clarifies this,” he explained.
He emphasized that AI safety can no longer be positioned as a secondary issue but must become a core part of AI technology development. Indonesia believes that innovation and responsibility must go hand in hand for AI to provide real benefits to society.
The Indonesian government also considers AI as a strategic technology to accelerate economic growth and strengthen public services, education and health. Therefore, its development must uphold ethics, fairness and equitable practices in the digital ecosystem.
To that end, Indonesia encourages the implementation of ethics, transparency and accountability at every stage of AI development, followed by a more equitable distribution of technological benefits through dialogue, adaptive policies and regulations.
Patria assessed that AI security is a global challenge that requires international collaboration, shared standards and ongoing dialogue.
Indonesia, according to him, is ready to contribute to strengthening global AI security to ensure that the technology remains safe, ethical, inclusive and human-centered.
“AI security is a global challenge. No single country can address it alone. Therefore, partnerships, shared standards and ongoing dialogue are increasingly important,” he said.
