Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has made economic integration between ASEAN and Russia, along with strengthened cooperation in energy and food security, the focus of the ASEAN-Russia Summit, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela.

Sugiono attended the summit in Kazan on 17–18 June 2026 as head of the Indonesian delegation, representing President Prabowo Subianto.

“At the meeting, Indonesia will encourage strengthening cooperation with Russia, particularly in the fields of food and energy security, as well as enhancing inter-regional economic integration,” the spokesperson said via a video statement broadcast on Thursday.

Indonesia will also push for stronger cooperation in achieving global peace and stability, Nabyl added.

He said the meeting in Kazan was held to review the achievements of the 35-year ASEAN-Russia partnership and to agree on the future direction of cooperation. Future cooperation between ASEAN and Russia, Nabyl said, must be ensured to remain relevant in facing various regional and global challenges.

The ASEAN-Russia Summit, held on 17–18 June in Kazan, Russia, coincided with the 35th anniversary of the ASEAN-Russia partnership.

During the summit dinner on Wednesday local time, Russian President Vladimir Putin affirmed his country’s readiness to continue the strategic partnership with ASEAN. Putin assessed that the strategic partnership is important for the security, welfare, and prosperity of nations in both regions and for Eurasia as a whole.

The decision to delegate Indonesia’s attendance at the ASEAN-Russia Summit to the foreign minister was made with consideration that President Prabowo wanted to focus on resolving domestic issues. This was disclosed by Minister of State Secretary and Presidential Spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi when met at Padepokan Garuda Yaksa, Prabowo’s private residence in Hambalang, Bogor Regency, West Java, on Wednesday. Prasetyo noted that President Prabowo’s meeting with President Putin in Moscow on 13 April and with ASEAN leaders at the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu in May were also taken into consideration.
