Indonesia Purchases Two Missile Systems from India

The Indonesian government has signed a procurement contract for two primary weapon systems from India. The deal was agreed upon when President Prabowo Subianto hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, 7 July 2026.

The two systems purchased are the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, produced by a joint venture between India and Russia, and the Astra air-to-air missile, manufactured by India’s military industry. The contract for the BrahMos was signed between the Indonesian Ministry of Defence and BrahMos Aerospace, while the Astra missile deal was concluded with Bharat Dynamics Limited.

Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, head of the Defence Ministry’s information bureau, stated that the procurement was driven by the operational needs of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). He emphasised that the acquisition process followed a comprehensive cycle of planning, strategic review, and evaluation.

‘The aim is to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities, enhance deterrence, and safeguard national sovereignty and interests,’ Sirait said on Saturday, 11 July 2026. He added that the authority for the operational deployment of the missiles rests entirely with the TNI.

Citing national security and military strategy considerations, the Ministry of Defence declined to disclose the contract value, the number of units ordered, or the delivery timeline.
