Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia promoted the advantages of palm kernel shell products and introduced empty fruit bunches of oil palm and palm trunk waste as biomass innovations in Tokyo, Japan, according to the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo on Friday.

According to a written statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo received in Jakarta, the promotion was held at the “Know More about Amazing Palm Biomass of Indonesia” business forum in the Indonesian Biomass Pavilion at the International Biomass Expo in Tokyo on 17-19 March 2026.

According to the Embassy, the promotion demonstrates that Indonesia emphasises sustainability aspects in the utilisation of oil palm waste for value-added products.

The Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Kartini Sjahrir, stated that the Indonesian Biomass Pavilion reflects a strong commitment to advancing the global transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy.

“Indonesia is committed to being a reliable and long-term partner for Japan in supporting its energy transition, particularly in the biomass sector,” said Ambassador Kartini.

Ambassador Kartini added that the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo is committed to strengthening business partnerships between Indonesian and Japanese stakeholders, including expanding market opportunities in the renewable energy sector.

“We are also working to promote Indonesia as a reliable partner in the global biomass supply chain,” she added.

The Deputy Ambassador of Indonesia to Japan, Maria Renata Hutagalung, emphasised that the event was held to strengthen cooperative relations between business actors, enhance branding and reputation of palm kernel shell biomass products, as well as the utilisation of Indonesian palm derivative products in Japan.

The International Biomass Expo is an event for promoting and networking in the biomass fuel sector, heat and power systems and technologies, targeting carbon neutrality by 2050.

According to the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, Indonesia’s biomass exports to Japan show a positive trend, increasing by 17 percent in value and 23 percent in volume. This development reflects growing market confidence in Japanese markets towards Indonesian biomass products.

The Embassy stated that several biomass products such as wood pellets, palm kernel shells, empty fruit bunches of oil palm, and other biomass derivatives offer sustainable solutions to support the growing demand for renewable energy.

The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo also conveyed that Ambassador Kartini witnessed the signing of an agreement to purchase Indonesian palm shells from PT Tricitra Agro Perdana with Pulp & Paper Corp Japan worth $11 million (Rp186.3 billion) or equivalent to 50,000 metric tons.
