Indonesia Population Data 2025: 199 Million People of Working Age
The Director-General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) at the Ministry of the Interior, Teguh Setyabudi, released the latest population data recorded in the second semester of 2025. According to the data, Indonesia’s population as of 31 December 2025 was recorded at 288,315,089 people.
The figure represents an increase of 1,621,396 people compared with the first semester release of 2025.
“Compared with the first semester on 30 June 2025, Indonesia’s population increased by approximately 1.6 million,” said Teguh during the Population Data Release Event for the Second Semester of 2025 at Hotel Bidakara, Jakarta, Thursday.
By gender, the population comprised 145,498,082 males and 142,816,997 females. Thus, Indonesia’s population remains dominated by males.
Regarding geographical distribution, the largest population concentration is on Java Island at 55.81 per cent. The second-largest is on Sumatra Island at 21.88 per cent.
By religion, the population is dominated by Islam at 87.15 per cent. Christians comprise 7.37 per cent, Catholics 3.07 per cent, Hindus 1.66 per cent, Buddhists 0.69 per cent, Confucians 0.03 per cent, and followers of other beliefs 0.034 per cent.
Teguh also presented population figures by marital status for the second semester of 2025. The data shows 131 million people who have never married, 137 million who are married, 5 million who are divorced, and 14 million who are widowed.
“In other words, most of Indonesia’s population is or has been married,” said Teguh.
Teguh also explained the size of the working-age population, defined as ages 15 to 64 years. This figure reaches 199 million people or 69.03 per cent of the total population.
“With 69.03 per cent of the population in the working-age bracket, we should be grateful. This represents the demographic dividend until 2030. The question now is how we optimise this working-age population,” said Teguh.
Teguh stated that the population data release fulfils the mandate of Law Number 24 of 2013 on Amendment to Law Number 23 of 2006 on Population Administration. Under this law, the Ministry of the Interior through the Directorate-General of Dukcapil releases population data in two semesters: the first semester on 30 June and the second semester on 31 December. “Why release this data? Population data is used for all purposes and serves as the basis for everything, whether public services or otherwise,” said Teguh.
