Indonesia Plans New Gas Alternative to Replace 3kg LPG; Sourcing Details Revealed

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has announced preparations for a new energy alternative to replace 3kg Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, namely Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The plan involves using CNG cylinders of the same size as the current 3kg LPG cylinders, with the government currently finalising the preparations.

The Director General of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of ESDM, Laode Sulaeman, revealed that in the initial stage, the government plans to import these specialised gas cylinders from China due to limited domestic technological mastery. He noted that the choice of China is based on their manufacturing readiness to produce high-tech cylinders. This import plan is intended to be temporary, serving as a pilot phase before mass production is transitioned to domestic facilities in Indonesia.
