Indonesia plans 5,000 home renovations in East Nusa Tenggara
Kupang (ANTARA) - Indonesia plans to renovate up to 5,000 homes in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) this year to improve living standards, marking a sharp increase from 436 units in 2025, the provincial governor said.
Governor Melki Laka Lena said the program targets low-income communities and reflects stronger central government support for housing in the eastern province.
“We see an increase from 436 housing units in 2025 to 5,000 this year. This is a major step toward helping poor communities access decent housing,” he said in Kupang on Friday.
The initiative was among key outcomes of Lena’s meeting with Housing and Settlements Minister Maruarar Sirait in Jakarta on Thursday.
He said the renovation program will cover Kupang City and 21 districts across NTT.
Lena added that the project will be supported by the People’s Business Credit (KUR) scheme for housing, a flagship policy introduced by President Prabowo Subianto.
Under the scheme, the government provides a five percent interest subsidy on housing loans with repayment periods of up to 30 years.
The program aims to expand home ownership among low-income groups, including junior civil servants, soldiers, police officers, teachers, fishermen, farmers and small business owners.
In addition to housing upgrades, the government plans to improve slum areas and support local economic activity.
This will be carried out through financing programs managed by state-owned microfinance firm PT Permodalan Nasional Madani.
Lena said the approach combines physical housing improvements with economic empowerment to ensure long-term benefits.
“By integrating housing upgrades with livelihood support, we aim to create sustainable improvements in living standards,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to the central government for prioritizing NTT in its housing programs.
“These initiatives give renewed hope for better living conditions for our communities,” Lena added.
The government expects the program to reduce housing backlogs and improve access to safe and adequate shelter.
Officials also see it as a way to stimulate local economies through construction and related sectors.
Sirait is scheduled to visit NTT to review coordination between central and local authorities.
