Indonesia Partners with India to Build Spaceport in Biak by 2027

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has announced that the Indonesian government is preparing a partnership with India to build a spaceport that will serve as a national satellite launch facility. BRIN Head Arif Satria stated that this initiative follows up on cooperation between the Indonesian and Indian governments.

“This has been emphasised by the Prime Minister and also the President, that this spaceport cooperation must be strengthened, and I have received a message to immediately follow up,” Arif said on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.

Arif explained that the spaceport will be built in Biak, Papua. The selection of Biak as the construction site is based on scientific studies and academic assessments. “There are several candidate locations for the spaceport, one of which is in Biak,” he added.

Preparations for the spaceport actually began during the era of the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) in the 1980s. Various studies have been continuously developed and were recently accelerated under the administration of President Prabowo. “Preparations have actually been underway for a long time, since the 80s when LAPAN began preparing, and they have continued to develop. When the President began his term, the plan was accelerated again,” he said.

BRIN is targeting the construction to enter the implementation phase by 2027. Throughout 2026, the government will focus on developing a master plan, technical planning, and establishing coordination with the local government in the projected spaceport area.
