Indonesia Partners with Imperial College London to Build 10 Medical Universities

President Prabowo Subianto is partnering with Imperial College London in a plan to build 10 new medical and science universities in Indonesia. The campus, currently ranked second in the world according to the QS World University Rankings, will be involved in curriculum development, improving lecturer quality, joint research, and supervising teaching standards at the new institutions.

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto stated that the collaboration was one of the agendas discussed when the Imperial College delegation was received directly by Prabowo at the Presidential Palace. “The curriculum, preparation of teaching standards, joint research, and visiting professors will be carried out together with Imperial College and other campuses,” Brian said during a press conference at the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta.

Brian explained that the government and Imperial College are currently exploring the formation of a strategic partnership to enhance the quality of higher education in Indonesia, particularly in the medical and science fields. He noted that the collaboration also has the potential to expand into other areas beyond medical education. The scheme involves Imperial College acting as a mentor for the new universities, rather than opening a branch campus in Indonesia. “They will become a mentor for our campuses, especially the new ones. The quality of lecturers, research, teaching standards, curriculum, and even hospital design will be supervised by professors from Imperial College,” he elaborated.

Brian added that the partnership is considered strategic given Imperial College’s global reputation. “We also know that for medical education, Imperial College is ranked fourth in the world. So if this collaboration can be realised, it is certainly a great opportunity for the Indonesian nation to work directly with a top world campus,” he concluded.
