RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology has underscored the importance of international research collaboration in addressing climate change. The ministry is growing their partnership with Australia through Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIE) as a key model.

The Director General of Research and Development Fauzan Adziman at the KIE Jakarta Summit Indicative at Jakarta, on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 noted that the cooperation serves as a platform to translate research into policy and practical solutions. He added that the collaboration aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s priority to enhance human capital development.

Through the partnership, 38 innovative research activities have been launched, forming an integrated ecosystem of solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. These initiatives span nine key pillars, including climate resilience, water security, food systems, health, energy transition, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, climate finance, and inclusive governance.

“The nine pillars promoted by Indonesian and Australian institutions carry extraordinary significance and can be described in three fundamental aspects for Indonesia’s future, namely economic, social and environmental,” Fauzan said, as quoted by the press release on Tuesday.

Research efforts focus on strengthening food and energy resilience, including the development of climate-resilient rice varieties and the integration of seaweed cultivation with solar energy systems. “These genetic technology innovations are crucial to ensuring food security, which ultimately supports national economic stability,” he said.

The research also aims to address unequal climate impacts, particularly among vulnerable communities. Environmentally, initiatives contribute to improving disaster monitoring systems, protecting biodiversity, and shaping equitable energy transition and decarbonization policies.

“The ultimate goal is to safeguard biodiversity, secure water availability, and manage disaster risks in an integrated manner,” Fauzan affirmed.

According to the press release, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology has introduced three industry collaboration schemes: “Industry Invitation,” “Technology Push,” and “Synergy.” These initiatives aim to connect academic research with industrial needs, bridge campus innovations to market adoption, and strengthen partnerships toward commercialization.

Between 2022 and 2025, the ministry funded 3,653 collaborations involving 2,734 partners. Total investment reached Rp3 trillion (around $185 million), with 53% contributed by industry and 47% by the government.
