“SRUK is targeted to begin operations in July, as directed by the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs. Hence, project developers that have readied project design documents can now conduct a trial by submitting data into the registry,” he said.

Hendropriyono described the trial as vital to expedite the opening of Indonesia’s carbon trading during the Indonesia Carbon Market Outlook 2026 event in Jakarta on Thursday (April 16), according to a statement received on Friday.

He emphasized that carbon trading is essential for Indonesia and the broader international community to overcome funding obstacles tied to emission reduction targets.

“We therefore need you all to participate in the trial stage, enabling us to manage the registry well once it is launched,” he told the audience.

The deputy minister stressed that carbon trading is widely regarded as one of the most prospective solutions to funding gaps in global climate action.

“Climate funding is paramount, as studies show that globally, we require US$8.6 trillion annually through 2030, with the figure expected to rise to US$10 trillion. Meanwhile, our collective efforts have only yielded US$1.4 trillion to US$1.9 trillion,” he said.

Looking inward, Hendropriyono said Indonesia continues struggling with a significant funding shortfall for climate programs.

“While we need Rp470 trillion (over US$27 billion) from 2020 to 2030, only Rp76 trillion is currently available for climate change action,” he added.

Present at the event, United Kingdom Ambassador to Indonesia Dominic Jermey praised the Indonesian government for demonstrating concrete efforts to develop a credible ecosystem for carbon trading.

He said Indonesia and the UK had agreed to partner in carbon market development following a meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London last January.
