REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The increasing global demand for fertiliser amid international distribution disruptions is seen as an opportunity for Indonesia to expand its exports, particularly for urea commodities.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono previously stated that several countries are beginning to seek fertiliser supplies from Indonesia as the global distribution chain is disrupted. Countries such as India, Australia, and the Philippines are said to have shown interest in importing fertiliser from Indonesia.

“This situation means that many countries around the world now need urea supplies from Indonesia. We are one of the world’s largest urea producers,” he said in a written statement on Monday (13/4/2026).

These distribution disruptions have also driven up global fertiliser prices in recent times, reflecting pressure on the supply side in the international market. On the industry side, national fertiliser producers view the current global situation as opening up space for Indonesia to play a larger and more strategic role.

President Director of PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) Rahmad Pribadi stated that national fertiliser supply resilience is supported by strong production capacity, totalling 14.8 million tonnes per year, including 9.4 million tonnes of urea.

This capacity is considered to provide flexibility for Indonesia to respond to export opportunities without disrupting domestic fertiliser supplies. “Amid global dynamics that are pressuring supplies in many countries, the fertiliser sector instead positions Indonesia in a stronger position. From the total 9.4 million tonnes of urea production capacity, we can export between 1.5 and 2 million tonnes depending on domestic needs,” he explained.
