JAKARTA – The Indonesian government is opening opportunities for Russia to strengthen long-term investment cooperation in the energy sector. This cooperation not only covers energy supplies but also strategic investments from Russia in building energy infrastructure in Indonesia.

The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, in his statement to the media at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta on Thursday, 16 April 2026, stated that this step is a follow-up to the meeting between the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, and the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, in Moscow on Monday (13/04).

“From the Russian side, they are ready to build several important infrastructures to increase our national energy reserves and resilience,” said the ESDM Minister.

In addition, the government is also discussing further the investment schemes that will enter Indonesia, particularly for refinery and storage projects that are considered to have high strategic value. The finalisation of these investments still requires several further discussion stages between the two countries.

“Indeed, there are several of their investments that are ready to enter, but the finalisation is waiting for another 1-2 rounds with us, specifically regarding refineries and storage,” he explained.

The ESDM Minister explained that the planned investments are within a long-term cooperation scheme, both through government-to-government (G2G) mechanisms and business-to-business (B2B).

“This cooperation is done in the long term. So because it is long-term cooperation, we do both G2G and B2B. Regarding storage, it is part of the agreement we made yesterday,” he continued.

This cooperation is part of the government’s strategy to diversify energy sources while strengthening Indonesia’s position in facing global dynamics. By opening investment opportunities from various countries, including Russia, Indonesia seeks to ensure that energy sector development runs sustainably and provides optimal benefits for the national economy.

The government emphasised that this step is in line with the principles of free and active foreign policy, which is also applied in economic and investment policies, while prioritising national interests.

“The Indonesian government always prioritises free and active politics, and in free and active politics, there is also free and active economy. So we can shop anywhere, as long as we are committed to the people or countries with whom we have invited cooperation,” he concluded.

With this step, Indonesia not only secures energy supplies but also accelerates the development of vital infrastructure that will support energy independence and future national economic growth.
