Indonesia Open gives Fryatt first golf tour title
JAKARTA (JP): Briton Edward Fryatt finally secured his first victory as a pro golfer when he fired an impressive appregate score of 13-under par-271 (67 65 68 71) in the Indonesia Open golf championship and took away the US$41,650 first prize.
Opening yesterday's round with a bogey, the 24-year-old fired three birdies at the 5th, 7th and 8th holes to go out in 34 at the par-71 Jagorawi Golf Country Club near Bogor.
"It's been a very long day, it's very hot and I had pressure from Daniel Chopra and from Jim Rutledge as well," said the Briton who moved from the U.K. to Las Vegas twenty years ago.
Fryatt, bogeyed the 10th and 17th holes, which he said were the most difficult holes, to give him an even par 71.
Fryatt, who never thought he would grab his first title here, said that he had not been sure of winning the US$250,000 tournament although he had seen his name on top of the leader board after playing the last hole.
The alumnus of Nevada University, Las Vegas, admitted that the Jagorawi course was difficult because "there are not many areas for you where you can play safely."
Jim Rutledge of Canada surprisingly set a new course record with a 7-under par-64 yesterday and stole the US$2,500 bonus from Fryatt, who set the course record 6-under par-65 on Friday.
Rutledge also jumped from tenth on Saturday to second, to tie with Daniel Chopra of Sweden, and finished 10-under par on 274 (72 70 68 64).
Rutledge birdied the 4th, 6th, 7th and 9th holes in the outward nine to reach the turn in 32. Homeward bound he produced four more birdies and a bogey.
"I got into a groove of putting well the whole way round," he said.
Rutledge said the hot and humid weather here did not influence his playing pattern during the four-day tournament.
Chopra, who was placed fifth on Friday climbed to joint second place, with the Canadian on an 10-under par. His score of 274 consisted of 72 68 66 68.
The Swede fired a perfect eagle on the 5th hole and birdied the 9th to go out with 33. Back to the club house, Chopra missed a shot for a bogey on the 11th before picking up a birdie in the 17th to card an even par 35.
Five strokes behind the Briton for third place was Australian Anthony Painter who carded a 69 yesterday for a four-day total of 8-under par-276 (66 70 71 69).
He went out with two birdies and a bogey for 35. Returning home Painter had problems with his putting as he made a double bogey on the 17th hole. But his birdie on the three previous holes, brought him back home in 34.
Defending champion Jose Cantero of Argentina failed to defend his title due to poor play and finished well down the field in 64th place with a score of 295 (69 77 77 72). (05)
