Indonesia Named Vice-Chair of Global Partnership for Poverty Alleviation and Development
Indonesia has been appointed as one of the Vice-Chairs in the Global Partnership for Poverty Alleviation and Development (GPPAD), an initiative led by China.
‘It is a great honour for me to present Indonesia’s perspective on poverty eradication, and we share the same concern for strengthening inclusive development together with China and other nations,’ said Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Villages and Disadvantaged Regions Development, Ahmad Riza Patria, in Beijing on Wednesday (27 June).
Riza Patria made the remarks during the first meeting of the GPPAD Committee, organised by the Chinese government.
Indonesia shares the Vice-Chair position with Côte d’Ivoire, Brazil, Pakistan, South Africa, and Uzbekistan, while China, represented by Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Zhang Lu, serves as the Chair.
‘Indonesia believes development must start from the village, as it is the hub of food production, local economy, and finance for millions of people. Therefore, the Indonesian government is committed to strengthening infrastructure, basic services, food security, education, healthcare, and community empowerment in rural areas,’ he added.
Under President Prabowo Subianto’s administration, Riza noted Indonesia has been bolstering village development and community economies through the establishment of 83,000 village cooperatives, construction of 5,000 red-and-white fishing villages, free health checks, and free nutritious meals for 60 million students to improve nutrition.
Riza stated Indonesia has experience in poverty eradication efforts but seeks to learn from other countries, including China.
‘It’s not just about programmes, but also procedural aspects, administrative systems, and on-the-ground implementation that we can learn from China’s extensive experience,’ he said.
During the plenary session, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong urged all parties to build consensus and accelerate global poverty alleviation.
‘China will actively support GPPAD in strengthening policy dialogue, technical demonstrations, talent training, and implementing “small but impactful” cooperation projects to help developing countries enhance their poverty alleviation capabilities,’ Liu stated.
He noted that by 2025, approximately 800 million people worldwide will still live below the international poverty line, with a poverty rate of 9.9 per cent.
Initiated by China alongside 53 other countries and nine international organisations, GPPAD marks a historic milestone in global poverty eradication efforts.
The partnership will promote the exchange of poverty alleviation experiences and governance practices, and jointly explore pathways to eradicate poverty at its roots, according to the announcement.
The partnership welcomes participation from governments, international organisations, the private sector, academia, and media to collectively foster a fair, inclusive, and non-discriminatory development environment in poverty alleviation efforts.
