Indonesia Mourns the Passing of King Harald V of Norway

The Indonesian government has officially expressed its condolences to the government and people of Norway following the passing of King Harald V on 28 August.

The condolences were conveyed by the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Sugiono, through a statement written in the book of condolences during his visit to the Norwegian Embassy in Jakarta on Tuesday (1/9).

“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Indonesia, I express my sympathy and condolences to the Kingdom of Norway and its people on the passing of His Majesty King Harald V,” said Sugiono in his condolences, as reported via X social media in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The Indonesian Foreign Minister stated that King Harald V will always be remembered for his leadership, warmth, dedication, and humility, particularly during his service as the Head of State of Norway.

“His leadership legacy will continue to inspire future generations,” he added.

Sugiono’s presence to convey condolences reflects the respect of the Indonesian people and government for the passing of King Harald V, while also reflecting the close friendship between Indonesia and Norway.

Sugiono’s arrival at the Norwegian Embassy to sign the book of condolences was received by the Deputy Ambassador of Norway to Indonesia, Christian Groseth.

King Harald V passed away on 28 August at the age of 89, after receiving medical treatment at the National Hospital in Oslo since 17 August, according to an announcement from the royal household.

The royal household stated that Harald had been receiving cortisone treatment to manage haemolytic anaemia, a blood disorder that causes fluid buildup in the body. His health worsened after he suffered a bacterial infection in his bloodstream, according to reports from the national television station NRK.

Following the death of Harald, Crown Prince Haakon immediately became the new Head of State of Norway as King Haakon VIII, as stipulated by the country’s constitution.

On 1 September, King Haakon VIII took his oath of allegiance to the Norwegian Constitution during a ceremony at the Norwegian Parliament.
