Indonesia Marks Fourth Year of Zero Terror Attacks, Vows to Maintain Status

Deputy Minister for Political and Security Affairs Lodewijk F. Paulus highlighted Indonesia’s success in achieving four years without a terrorist attack, known as zero attack. He urged that this status be maintained. “Alhamdulillah, this zero attack has entered its fourth year. This is what we continue to safeguard,” Lodewijk said after attending an event on the collaborative implementation of fulfilling the rights and protection of victims of violent extremism and terrorism crimes, held in conjunction with the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism 2026 in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Friday (21/8/2026).

Lodewijk stressed that the government wants no further terrorist attacks in the future. He called on the public to help suppress acts of terrorism to maintain the zero-attack status. “Public involvement is needed so that, as I said earlier, we continue to suppress acts of terrorism to remain at zero attack,” he said.

At the same event, Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Eddy Hartono stated that over the past four years, 28 planned terror attacks were successfully prevented by the BNPT. “Over these four years, there have been approximately 28 planned terror attacks that were prevented,” Eddy said.

Eddy explained that this is an implementation of Law Number 5 of 2018. Under the law, preparatory acts are already considered criminal offences, allowing for early mitigation. “In Law Number 5/2018, preparatory acts are already included in criminal law norms, so mitigation can be carried out from the outset,” he explained.
