Indonesia Leads Southeast Asia in AI Visual Creativity, Generating 9 Million Images Daily

The inaugural Gemini Report: Southeast Asia 2026, released by Google on Tuesday (14/7), reveals that Indonesia is the most creative country in Southeast Asia in utilising artificial intelligence (AI) based on Gemini. Data from the report shows that the Indonesian public generates nearly nine million custom images daily. This figure is the highest compared to the five other countries reviewed in the report, namely Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Google’s Vice President for Southeast Asia and South Asia Frontier, Sapna Chadha, disclosed that one in every three prompts submitted by users in Indonesia is purely creative. This demonstrates a high level of enthusiasm for realising visual ideas through AI technology. This high level of creativity is driven by a highly dominant mobile device usage pattern. Google noted several key points regarding user behaviour in Indonesia. ‘Another unique aspect of Indonesia is the way they provide prompts. Almost half use voice or image input to express their ideas,’ Chadha said during the online presentation. Overall in Southeast Asia, the report notes that around 40 percent of Gemini user queries aim to produce new creations, ranging from images, music, and videos to documents. Over the past year, users in the region have generated a total of five billion images using the Nano Banana image generation model. Beyond visuals, the audio sector also showed significant growth with the creation of nearly 1 million songs through Lyria 3, Gemini’s music generation model. The surge in active Gemini app users in Southeast Asia, which more than doubled in the past year, is influenced by the dominance of a young, tech-savvy population and the AI’s ability to understand local languages.
