Indonesia launches biodiversity reports to protect natural wealth
“I see biodiversity as being similar to rare earth resources minerals. We can only harness and benefit from rare earth if we have sufficient understanding and scientific knowledge,” National Development Planning Minister Rachmat Pambudy said during the report’s launch here on Tuesday.
The reports were developed in collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the Environment Ministry, the Forestry Ministry, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and the Ministry of Agriculture, with support from the German government through GIZ Indonesia & ASEAN and the Indonesia Conservation Foundation.
The launch reflects Indonesia’s commitment to evidence-based policymaking and planning grounded in various scientific data.
These four biodiversity status reports provide a strategic framework for the 2025-2045 Indonesian Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (IBSAP), aligning with national long-term (RPJPN) and medium-term (RPJMN) development plans as well as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The reports detail regional ecosystem, species, and genetic diversity, highlighting challenges, pressures, and conservation priorities.
Pambudy said Indonesia’s rich biodiversity represents vital natural capital that supports food, water, and energy security, improves public health, and drives the green and blue economies.
Therefore, biodiversity management is an integral part of the national development agenda toward Golden Indonesia 2045.
“We still have one task, namely preparing the report for the Kalimantan region. We hope this collaboration will allow us to complete it and provide a comprehensive biodiversity map covering all regions of Indonesia,” Deputy for Food, Natural Resources, and Environment at Bappenas Leonardo Sambodo said.
Updating biodiversity data is important to address growing various ecosystem threats, from climate change and habitat loss to pollution, overexploitation, and species decline.
