Indonesia is opening opportunities for cooperation with Russian companies in the development of strategic railway corridors. This was revealed by the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), on Sunday in Jakarta.

AHY stated that as the world’s largest island nation, comprising 17,380 islands and a population of approximately 280 million people, transportation serves as the vital vein that unites the nation and connects the entire archipelago. Indonesia continues to require the development of a railway network to strengthen national connectivity. Consequently, the country is offering opportunities for Russian companies to participate in major projects, including the Trans-Sumatra, Trans-Sulawesi, and Trans-Borneo railways.

These cooperation opportunities encompass not only network construction but also technology development and the manufacturing of railway infrastructure, high-speed and heavy-haul rail engineering, the improvement of safety and operational standards, and the development of low-carbon railways. Strengthening human resources and research capacity is also a primary focus. Russia’s experience in managing public transport systems, particularly the Moscow Metro, can serve as a valuable reference for the development of MRT, LRT, and commuter rail in Indonesia.

The meeting between AHY and the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, Andrey Nikitin, in Moscow was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between Indonesia and Russia, specifically regarding the development of modern, sustainable, and competitive transport systems.
