RRI.CO.ID, Wonosobo - Indonesia is intensifying efforts to attract investment in the livestock sector to boost national milk and meat production. Wonosobo Regency in Central Java is being positioned as a potential new hub for both dairy and beef cattle.
Vice Minister of Agriculture, Sudaryono, emphasized that investment opportunities in livestock are currently wide open. The statement was delivered during a cattle contest event held in Wonosobo, based on a release received by RRI Voice of Indonesia, Monday April 27, 2026.
“I invite investment in the livestock sector because if you raise dairy cattle, the milk will definitely sell, and if you raise beef cattle, the meat will definitely sell,” he said. He stressed that strong market demand provides assurance for investors entering the sector.
He noted that national demand for milk continues to rise significantly. Much of the current dairy production has already been absorbed by the government’s Free Nutritious Meals program.
“Now all dairy farming centers are absorbed to meet the needs of the Free Nutritious Meals program. This is a good opportunity,” he added. The program is expected to further drive demand for fresh milk across the country.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Muzani highlighted the large gap in domestic milk supply. He said Indonesia currently meets only about 25 percent of its fresh milk demand, leaving significant room for expansion.
“I hope Wonosobo can become a center for fulfilling fresh milk needs. In the coming years, it is expected to become a national dairy hub, but this requires investment,” he stated. The government sees regional development as key to closing the supply gap.
Meanwhile, Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi added that while meat production in the province is nearly sufficient, milk production remains a challenge. He emphasized the need to increase dairy cattle populations and strengthen animal health systems.
Through collaboration between central and regional governments as well as the private sector, Indonesia aims to accelerate livestock investment. The initiative is expected to improve farmers’ welfare while reducing reliance on imported meat and dairy products.
