Indonesia integrates STEM into early childhood education program

The program aims to build critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability in young learners starting at the kindergarten level.

“We are committed to the 13-year compulsory education program, which focuses not only on providing access to education from kindergarten onwards, but also on delivering a curriculum that fosters both interest and capabilities in STEM,” Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti said at the launch event in Kudus, Central Java.

Mu’ti emphasized that early STEM education will rely on hands-on, sensory learning adapted to children’s natural development stages.

By engaging students with their physical surroundings, the ministry also hopes to encourage outdoor activity and curb gadget addiction.

To support the rollout, the ministry is updating digital learning materials, establishing creative learning spaces across 50 elementary schools, and embedding practical science projects into daily activities.

“We aim to integrate STEM into children’s everyday learning experiences rather than treating it as a mere additional program,” said Director General of Teachers and Educational Personnel Nunuk Suryani.
