Indonesia, India seek stronger parliamentary cooperation

Speaking before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the House of Representatives, Puan said both parliaments should deliver concrete benefits for the people of Indonesia and India.

She said the two countries should deepen development cooperation and work together to safeguard regional stability amid intensifying geopolitical rivalry and global challenges.

Puan called for stronger cooperation not only between the two governments but also between their legislatures.

She said parliamentary diplomacy complements government diplomacy by expanding dialogue, strengthening mutual trust and supporting bilateral and multilateral initiatives.

Puan welcomed the Indian Parliament’s establishment of the India-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group in February 2026 and expressed hope it would work closely with Indonesia’s counterpart, formed in January 2025.

She said Modi’s visit would further strengthen relations and deliver tangible benefits for both countries.

Puan said economic cooperation should extend beyond trade to include value-added industries, downstream processing, technology transfer and stronger regional supply chains.

She also reaffirmed support for closer coordination between the two governments and parliaments to promote a transparent, investment-friendly business environment.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also attended Modi’s parliamentary visit. Earlier, the leaders held bilateral talks and witnessed the signing of 16 cooperation agreements covering sectors including defense, health and agriculture.
