Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir has called for water resilience to be a foundation for global defence and development amid increasingly complex challenges.

The statement was made by Arrmanatha at the 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018–2026, also known as the Dushanbe Water Conference 2026 (DWC2026), held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, from 25 to 28 May 2026.

“Water is now a strategic resource underpinning the global digital economy. Previously, resource conflicts focused on oil and land, but future global competition is expected to increasingly revolve around water control and access,” he said.

He stressed that water resilience is a critical test for sustainable development, given limited global access to clean water and proper sanitation, and rising demand for water in digital and critical mineral industries.

According to Arrmanatha, water crises can no longer be viewed solely as environmental or technical issues, but as multidimensional challenges tied to stability, justice, and the future of global governance.

He also emphasised the need for responsive and equitable multilateral systems and global governance to address water-related challenges.

The Dushanbe Water Conference series is a joint initiative by the Tajikistan government and the United Nations (UN) to mobilise collective efforts in implementing the Water Action Agenda and achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The meeting is also part of preparations for the UN Water Conference 2026, scheduled for 2-4 December in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

DWC2026 was opened by Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon, who highlighted the complexity of global water challenges and obstacles in achieving SDG 6 on water and sanitation access.

The conference was attended by representatives from 110 countries and 75 international organisations, including UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Water Retno L.P. Marsudi.

Indonesia’s delegation also participated in the Asia-Pacific regional preparatory meeting for UNWC2026, organised by UNESCAP on 25 May 2026.

The meeting aimed to consolidate regional perspectives to accelerate SDG 6 achievement and strengthen Asia-Pacific partnerships ahead of the UN Water Conference 2026.

Indonesia continues to strengthen its global leadership on water issues following its hosting of the 10th World Water Forum in Nusa Dua, Bali, in May 2024.

Indonesia’s presence at DWC 2026 underscores the importance of water and sanitation as part of broader strategic development agendas, aligning with President Prabowo Subianto’s priority on water resource management as key to national food security and independence.
