Indonesia Highlights International Community's Failure on Palestine
JAKARTA – Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono expressed the country’s stance on Palestine’s plight at a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting. The high-level open debate, themed ‘Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centred International System’, took place at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday (26 May 2026) local time.
Sugiono highlighted the ongoing violence faced by Palestinians and the weak enforcement of law in the region. ‘Indonesia views the situation in Palestine, particularly Gaza, as a clear reflection of the international community’s failure to uphold these principles fairly and consistently,’ according to a Foreign Ministry statement. ‘We reiterate that Palestinian independence through a two-state solution is an absolute necessity,’ he added.
Therefore, the role of the UN and its Security Council is crucial in resolving the conflict. A Foreign Ministry press release stated that Sugiono’s presence at the UNSC meeting underscored Indonesia’s commitment to active participation in peace and humanitarian efforts, including Gaza’s reconstruction and recovery.
During the forum, Sugiono also mentioned Indonesia’s participation in the Gaza Peace Board (BoP), established by former US President Donald Trump. Sugiono described Indonesia’s BoP involvement as a demonstration of the country’s consistent free and active foreign policy in supporting just and sustainable peace in line with the two-state solution, as well as tangible support for the Palestinian people.
