Indonesia Has an AI Regulation, Just Waiting for Prabowo's Signature
The government has prepared regulations on artificial intelligence, which are planned for release this year. However, several companies from the United States requested adjustments, leading to a new draft being created. “I correct myself, there was a request from several American companies to re-discuss. We conducted a re-discussion yesterday and have adopted the inputs to find a middle ground between innovation and protection,” said Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid, after the Bravo 500 Summit event in Jakarta on Thursday (11/6/2026). She explained the new draft has been submitted to the State Secretariat. It is hoped the regulatory draft can be signed soon by President Prabowo Subianto. “So there is now a new draft that has been submitted to the State Secretariat, which we hope can be signed soon,” she added. The government is preparing a Presidential Regulation concerning AI ethics and a roadmap for technology development in Indonesia. Both will contain the infrastructure foundations and regulations. It also concerns the risk stages of the technology. The roadmap also regulates ten priority sectors, starting with ten national priority sectors: food security, health, education, economy and finance, bureaucratic reform, politics, law and security, energy and environment, housing, transport, infrastructure, and arts and creative economy. Meutya said all these sectors are in line with the Asta Cita proclaimed by President Prabowo Subianto. She hopes both will be released this year, confirming the Presidential Regulation is essentially finished. “God willing, hopefully there will be no more requests for re-consultation. But God willing, this year we are very, very confident because in principle, the Presidential Regulation is finished,” she stated.
