Indonesia eyes Bermuda Bowl

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's hopes of qualifying for the Bermuda Bowl World Bridge Championship in Beijing, China, next September became brighter after its six-strong national team won the Australia Open Bridge Tournament concluded in Canberra on Monday.

Spearheaded by veteran pair Hengky Lasut/Eddy Manoppo, the Indonesian team beat the host squad 167-146 IMP in the final and ousted the other 274 participating teams, including strong competitors which dominated last year's World Championship in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Roy Tirtadji, chairman of the Indonesian Bridge Association's training and skills development section, said it was the first time that the senior team, consisting of players older than 30, had ever won the tournament since they first took part in 1989.

The Hengky-led team will be eligible for the world championship if it manages to either win or finishes as runner-up of the Far East championship in Perth next May, which serves as the qualifying round for the Bermuda Bowl. (arf)
