TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia recorded an egg and poultry production surplus, according to Trade Minister Budi Santoso, resulting in lower prices. The government, therefore, is exploring exports to Singapore.

“It’s true that eggs and meat are in surplus. So, there’s an oversupply,” Budi said in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

Nevertheless, the trade ministry is still working to find buyers, who, once the government finds them, will meet with producers in Indonesia.

“We haven’t found any buyers yet, but we’re exploring ways to absorb them in other countries. So this presents an export opportunity,” he said.

According to Budi, the price decline isn’t limited to eggs and chicken; a number of other staple foods have also ben seeing lower prices.

Budi reported that the current egg and poultry prices are below the highest retail price (HET), with the current market price of eggs at Rp26,000 per kilogram, down from the HET of Rp30,000.

Additionally, chicken meat price also dropped from the highest retail price of Rp40,000 per kilogram to Rp36,000 per kilogram.

“So, if you look at the (Market and Staple Needs Monitoring System) SP2KP, yes, some prices have indeed dropped. Yesterday, I went to Banyumas, and there were several commodities facing price drops,” he said.

In addition to the production surplus, Budi said the government’s suspension of the free nutritious meal (MBG) program has also led to a decrease in the absorption of these commodities.

“One of the contributing factors is the suspension of the free meal program, leading to the absorption being lower,” he said.
