Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said the first US-Iran negotiation, held in Islamabad last weekend, were a good start and should be continued - despite their failure to reach any agreement yet.

“Indonesia regrets the failure to reach an agreement during the talks between the US and Iran, despite Pakistan’s hard work in facilitating dialogue between the two parties,” Yvonne stated here on Thursday.

“However, Indonesia views this negotiation as an appropriate and very important initial step, and therefore must be continued,” she added.

Indonesia also continues to urge all parties involved to maintain restraint to prevent the conflict from spreading further on global stability and peace.

She added that Indonesia consistently encourages all parties to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the conflict.

In this effort, Indonesia called for continued respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as international law and the UN Charter.

“Indonesia reiterated its commitment to continue supporting diplomatic efforts related to this conflict,” Yvonne said.

The US and Iran held their first round of negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, after US President Donald Trump announced he had reached an agreement with Tehran for a two-week ceasefire.

However, on Sunday (April 12), US Vice President J.D. Vance, who led the US delegation, stated that Washington and Tehran had failed to reach an agreement in the negotiations.

To force Iran back to the negotiating table, Trump ordered the US Navy to blockade the Strait of Hormuz and intercept ships entering and leaving Iranian ports.

Trump further said that the next round of negotiations between Washington and Tehran could take place in Pakistan in the near future.
