Indonesia Digital Innovation Centre Launches, BI Governor Aims to Gather Big Ideas
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Bank Indonesia (BI) launched the Indonesia Digital Innovation Centre (PIDI) on Thursday (30/4/2026) at Grha Bhasvara Icchana, Jakarta. BI Governor Perry Warjiyo stated that this launch marks a historic day for the nation.
“Today is history, today is our shared history, continuing the digital revolution that we have been undertaking for five years since the blueprints; we are leaping forward, this is a step. Digital technology is already here and continues to develop very rapidly,” he said in his speech.
Perry noted that the Hackathon running alongside PIDI has attracted significant interest from participants ranging from students to professionals. They then formed teams and submitted proposals for digital innovation ideas.
According to records, the number of proposals received reached nearly 2,500, far higher than BI’s projection of 1,500 proposals.
“We initially projected a maximum of 1,500 proposals, but it turned out to be nearly 2,500 proposals. Each proposal has 3-5 team members from 2,500 teams, meaning up to 12,500 people. Between 7,500-12,500 team members,” he said.
These nearly 2,500 proposals were then selected down to 800 chosen proposals, which, according to the BI Governor, broadly represent innovations in the fields of financial and economic inclusion, clusters for digitalisation of financial services, including credit risk and cyber threats, and digital finance innovations based on public services.
In the next stage, the participants will undergo 2.5 months of training both online and in-person, while being selected to 480 teams in the semi-final round.
In this round, Perry said they will conduct sandboxing to assess whether the business proposals can be implemented as profitable businesses. The evaluation will be carried out by stakeholders such as OJK, digital payment associations, payment system associations, and Bank Indonesia.
Then, from the 480 teams, they will advance to the final round to determine the winners.
This Hackathon is not merely a competition but also a platform for digital innovation training and an opportunity for business matching with investors.
The inauguration of PIDI is in the context of building a national digital innovation ecosystem as an effort to dedicate to the nation through job creation and economic growth via the creation of sustainable business value for the industry, supported by talent development, implementable innovation, and synergy between policy and public needs.
“Build your vision, your dream, never stop dreaming. Believe in your future. Do strategic action, never give up, get things done, keep moving forward. Number 3 is strategic influencing, the power of being, team cooperation. That’s the key, 3 keys to success,” Perry said to the participants.
PIDI is positioned as a policy enabler that bridges public policy with industry needs and technology development through an integrated approach from upstream to downstream. Through PIDI, innovative ideas from the nation’s young talents will be supported by technical capability training, business understanding, as well as adequate mentoring and guidance until they are ready to be developed into digital products/services to address priority national needs.
PIDI is designed to ensure that innovation does not stop at the idea stage but moves end-to-end through three main pillars:
First, Market Intelligence, to map innovations developing in the market that are relevant to public needs. This pillar is aimed at producing the main output in the form of Strategic Intelligent Market Analytics (SIGMA).
The second pillar is Innovation Experimentation, which features the Hackathon as an intellectual competition to generate technology solutions in addressing national priority issues.
Third, Digital Talent Development, present through the DIGDAYA (Empowered and Productive Digital Talent) initiative, which will enhance digital talent capacity through structured training schemes to produce digital talents and create digital jobs.
