Indonesia Demands UN Investigation into Israeli Attack on TNI Soldiers in UNIFIL
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Umar Hadi, has demanded a swift, thorough, and transparent UN investigation into the Israeli attack in southern Lebanon that killed three Indonesian soldiers in the UNIFIL mission at the end of March 2026.
The Indonesian government has also requested that the Security Council monitor and firmly follow up on the investigation results, while demanding legal accountability for the perpetrators without granting immunity in the case of the attack on the peacekeeping forces.
Speaking at the UN Security Council meeting on the Situation in the Middle East on Tuesday, Umar strongly condemned the attacks on UNIFIL forces on 29 and 30 March 2026.
Indonesia has further urged all parties, including Israel, to halt aggression and comply with international law to ensure the safety of personnel and the protection of United Nations assets.
Umar emphasised that the safety of peacekeeping forces must be the top priority, including through emergency measures to strengthen personnel protection amid escalating conflict on the ground.
These steps include reviewing security protocols and activating evacuation plans tailored to developments in the southern Lebanon conflict zone.
The Security Council is urged to reaffirm the principles of protecting peacekeeping forces and to take concrete steps to ensure their safety from further attacks.
Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to world peace and urged the Security Council to act firmly, united, and clearly in responding to the incident.
He stated that Indonesia, together with France, requested the Security Council meeting as a manifestation of its long-term commitment to UN peacekeeping operations since 1957.
Umar conveyed deep grief and outrage over the attack that killed three TNI soldiers, while appreciating the solidarity from Security Council members and the international community.
He paid tribute to Captain Infantry Zulmi Aditya Iskandar (33), Sergeant First Class Muhammad Nur Ichwan (25), and Leading Private Fahrizal Rhomadhon (27), who fell in the line of duty.
Fahrizal was killed at the UNIFIL position in Adchit Al Qusayr, while Zulmi and Muhammad were killed in an attack on a logistics convoy in Bani Hayyan.
In addition to the fatalities, five other personnel were injured: Captain Sultan Wirdean Maulana, Corporal Rico Pramudia, Corporal Arif Kurniawan, Corporal Bayu Prakoso, and Cadet Private Deni Rianto.
“These peacekeepers fell and were injured while carrying out the Security Council’s mandate,” Umar said.
Indonesia has urged the swift, safe, and dignified repatriation of the bodies, and requested optimal care for the injured personnel to ensure their full recovery.
He rejected the notion that the victims were in an active war zone, emphasising the importance of identifying those responsible for escalating the conflict.
According to Umar, tensions in southern Lebanon were triggered by repeated Israeli military attacks that violate Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Indonesia views the increased attacks on UNIFIL in recent weeks as a systematic pattern aimed at undermining the mandate of Resolution 1701.
The attacks pose a serious threat to global peace and could potentially be categorised as war crimes under international law, he said.
