Indonesia consumer confidence slips on price worries

JAKARTA, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Indonesian consumer confidence slipped in September, on concerns over rises in key prices including toll road fees and electricity tariffs, a central bank survey showed on Thursday.

Indonesia's toll roads tariffs were raised by about 18 percent late last month and analysts have warned that along with planned increases in other prices such as electricity inflationary pressures would build next year.

Bank Indonesia's survey of 4,600 households in 18 cities released on its website (www.bi.go.id) showed the consumer confidence index fell to 110.8 in September, from a reading of 114.3 in August.

A reading above 100 means more consumers are optimistic than pessimistic.

But a separate survey by state-controlled Danareksa Research Institute, showed that Indonesian consumer remained pessimistic after their index slipped 6.8 percent to 87.5 in September 2009 -- a five month low.

'The slump in confidence was broad-based and reflects a number of concerns weighing on consumers, including increases in the prices of basic foodstuffs, in addition to a less positive view on both the economy and the job market,' Danareksa said in its survey.
