Indonesia condemns escalation of Israeli attacks on Lebanon
The Indonesian Government has strongly condemned the escalation of Israeli attacks on Lebanon, which have caused loss of life and infrastructure damage, constituting serious violations of international law.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has noted that Israel’s escalation of attacks on Lebanon violates UN Security Council Resolution 1701 of 2006 and international humanitarian law.
“Indonesia calls on all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and cease attacks endangering civilians and civilian infrastructure,” according to a statement from Kemlu RI, monitored in Jakarta on Saturday.
Indonesia is concerned that the escalation of tensions is not limited to the “Blue Line” demarcation line in southern Lebanon, but has extended to Beirut, Lebanon’s capital.
Indonesia urges all conflicting parties to prioritise dialogue and diplomatic measures to prevent further escalation and achieve peace.
Recognising that the tension in Lebanon also affects the UN Temporary Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Kemlu RI expressed concern over attacks on UNIFIL positions that have resulted in injuries to peacekeeping personnel.
Indonesia emphasises that under international law, all parties are responsible for ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel and property wherever they are located, particularly in Lebanon.
In the same statement, Kemlu RI also expressed appreciation to the Garuda Contingent for continuing to carry out its duties at UNIFIL and confirmed that the safety of Indonesian personnel remains a top priority.
Following a combined United States and Israeli attack on Iran on 28 February, the Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah launched attacks on several Israeli military positions on 2 March.
The attacks occurred despite a ceasefire between the two sides remaining in effect since November 2024, though Israel continues to commit daily violations that have caused hundreds of deaths.
On 2 March, Israeli forces then carried out attacks on several locations in Lebanon, including southern Beirut and southern and eastern Lebanese regions. The following day, on 3 March, Israeli military forces crossed the Lebanon border.
Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed over 400 people and forced thousands of other Lebanese residents to flee their homes.
