Indonesia Condemns Attack in Lebanon That Killed TNI Personnel Serving with UNIFIL
The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu), has conveyed deep condolences over the death of one TNI personnel serving in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL). This tragic incident occurred on Sunday (29 March) due to an indirect artillery attack that struck the Indonesian contingent’s position near Adchit Al Qusayr in southern Lebanon.
In addition to the fatality, the attack also injured three other Indonesian personnel.
This event took place amid rising intensity of exchanges of fire between the Israeli military and armed groups in the border region.
In response to the incident, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a strong condemnation of the event that endangers the safety of peacekeeping forces.
“I strongly condemn the Sunday incident that killed an Indonesian peacekeeper from @UNIFIL_ amid hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. Another Indonesian peacekeeper was seriously injured in the same incident,” Guterres stated via X.
Guterres also urged all parties to comply with international law and ensure the security of UN assets and personnel. He emphasised that this incident is one of several recent events threatening the safety of peacekeepers.
The Indonesian government has strongly condemned the attack and demanded a thorough and transparent investigation. Kemenlu stressed that the safety of UN personnel must be fully respected in accordance with applicable international law.
“Indonesia once again strongly condemns Israel’s attack in southern Lebanon and calls on all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, halt attacks that endanger civilians and civilian infrastructure, and return to dialogue and diplomacy,” read the official Kemenlu statement via X.
Currently, Indonesia is closely coordinating with the UN and relevant authorities to monitor the on-ground situation. The government is also working to expedite the repatriation of the victim’s remains and ensure the best medical care for the injured personnel.
Indonesia extends its highest respects to the fallen personnel for their dedication to maintaining international stability and peace.
