Indonesia Committed to Strengthening a More Effective International System

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that Indonesia is committed to playing an active role in multilateral cooperation in order to encourage the international system to become more effective and inclusive.

“We will be at the negotiating table, not merely on the sidelines. We will help shape the rules, not simply follow them. And we will defend the international system by making it better,” said Sugiono, according to a press release from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Thursday.

Sugiono delivered the remarks at the Jakarta Geopolitical Forum X, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism: Survival Amid Global Turbulence and A Fragmented World”, organised by the National Resilience Institute (Lemhanas RI) in Jakarta on Thursday.

Sugiono said that multilateralism requires genuine commitment from every country in order to function effectively, affirming that Indonesia is committed to supporting and strengthening multilateral cooperation.

The Foreign Minister also stated that Indonesia will continue to play an active role in various multilateral forums while adhering to the principle of an independent and active foreign policy.

He said that good relations can be fostered with all parties as multilateralism remains relevant to international cooperation, whilst stressing that every decision taken is always based on the national interest.

Sugiono acknowledged that the world is becoming fragmented and changing rapidly. Nevertheless, he stated that Indonesia remains optimistic in facing this, believing that every change can present new opportunities for growth.

“Not a single country wants a fragmented world. However, as I have said before, this is today’s reality. Indonesia will face it with confidence,” said Sugiono.

Sugiono assessed that new roles and partnerships will belong to countries that are prepared to confront change, affirming that Indonesia is determined to be such a nation.
