Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has conveyed its congratulations on the successful conduct of the Bangladesh general election and expressed hope that it will further strengthen bilateral partnership and enhance cooperation for the prosperity of both nations' peoples, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a statement posted by the official @Kemlu_RI account monitored in Jakarta on Monday, Indonesia congratulated the Government and people of Bangladesh on the successful holding of the election.

"We commend Chief Adviser Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus for his leadership during the transition period, as well as the effective preparation and conduct of the election," the statement read.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed hope that Indonesia and Bangladesh could further strengthen their bilateral partnership and deepen cooperation for the prosperity of both nations' peoples.

It was previously reported that Bangladesh held its general election on Thursday (12 February), with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by Tarique Rahman securing 209 of the 300 parliamentary seats.

The Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance won 77 seats and will serve as the opposition, whilst the Awami League party led by Sheikh Hasina was barred from contesting the election on grounds of human rights violations and anti-democratic conduct.

The victory paves the way for the restoration of political stability following the ousting of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a student uprising in 2024. Hasina fled to India in August 2024, which was subsequently followed by the formation of an interim government with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus as chief adviser.
