Indonesia-China Cross-Border QRIS Targeted for Integration into WeChat Pay, Following Alipay and UnionPay
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The implementation of the Indonesia-China cross-border QRIS will be expanded to other digital payment platforms in China, such as WeChat Pay.
ASPI Chairman Santoso Liem stated that the Indonesia-China QRIS, newly launched on 30 April 2026, can currently only be used through the Alipay and UnionPay platforms.
The cooperation has the potential to be extended to WeChat Pay, which is also a major payment platform provider in China.
“Going forward, we have already discussed the possibility of WeChat Pay and also MPC, which is another mobile payment that will collaborate. So they are building a single QR. It is hoped that eventually all QR codes in China can be used,” he said when met at the BI Building in Jakarta on Thursday (30/4/2026).
Santoso also admitted to having directly tried using the cross-border QRIS in China and assessed that its implementation is running quite well, although it has not yet spread widely to all merchants.
He revealed that from Indonesia’s side, the cross-border QRIS infrastructure is actually ready. The challenges come from the Chinese side, which still needs to integrate various domestic payment platforms into a single national QR standard.
“On their side, there is an issue because there are only two so far. They must integrate; they must change it into one platform. This platform actually already exists in the domestic platform, but we are asking if it can also serve international [users],” he explained.
“So they must integrate, of course there will be some adjustments. But for Alipay and UnionPay, it can already be used,” he added.
He further noted that the use of Indonesia-China QRIS has great potential along with the high mobility of tourists and trade activities between Indonesia and China.
“The total players in Indonesia are mostly micro and SMEs, around 44-45 million. In China, we know the population is large and the players are also many. What we have heard is that they are approaching hundreds of millions up to the SMEs and tourists there, both services and goods,” said Santoso.
