Indonesia-China Cross-Border QRIS Officially Launches on 30 April 2026
Bank Indonesia (BI) has announced that it will soon launch a collaboration on the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) with China. The planned launch of the Indonesia-China cross-border QRIS is scheduled for the end of April 2026. “The Indonesia-China inter-country QRIS will be launched on 30 April 2026,” said BI Governor Perry Warjiyo during the online press conference for the April 2026 Board of Governors Meeting (RDG) on Wednesday (22/4/2026). The launch of this cross-border QRIS collaboration is BI’s effort to strengthen the implementation of digitalisation measures in the payment system, in line with the Indonesia Payment System Blueprint (BSPI) 2030 to support the acceleration of the national digital economy and finance. This collaboration will officially add to the list of countries whose citizens can use their respective QR codes in partner countries. Those countries are Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea. BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta explained that during the trial process of the Indonesia-China cross-border QRIS usage, public enthusiasm was high. The trial of the Indonesia-China cross-border QRIS was known to have started on 17 August 2025, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence. “We see that the enthusiasm in this trial is very high. In the trial itself, the transaction volume has reached 1.64 million transactions, with a nominal value of Rp556 billion. This is just sandboxing or just a trial. So, hopefully, when it launches, it will be even higher,” she stated. Fili mentioned that there are currently 24 providers from Indonesia, consisting of 16 banks and eight non-bank institutions, participating in the utilisation of the Indonesia-China cross-border QRIS. Meanwhile, from China, there are 19 providers. “So basically, both from a technical and business perspective, this is ready to be implemented. Then, on the 30th, we will cut the ribbon,” she said. Previously, cross-border transaction conveniences have become more apparent for Indonesians. With the expansion of QRIS to South Korea, citizens can now transact simply by scanning the QR code via their mobile phones without needing to exchange cash. This expansion adds to the list of countries connected to Indonesia’s digital payment system, following Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan. Up to early 2026, the total cross-border QRIS transactions recorded more than 7.6 million transactions, dominated by tourism and daily consumption needs. For the public, this system provides direct convenience. Payment amounts are automatically converted to rupiah during transactions, so users no longer need to manually calculate exchange rates or carry large amounts of cash.
