Indonesia Calls on the World to Act After Israel Approves Death Penalty for Palestinian Detainees

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenlu RI), has issued a strong condemnation of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, for approving a law implementing the death penalty for Palestinian detainees.

In its statement, Kemenlu RI emphasised that the policy is unacceptable as it undermines the sense of justice and contradicts universal humanitarian values.

“The Government of the Republic of Indonesia strongly condemns the Knesset’s approval of the law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian detainees. This policy is unacceptable and undermines the sense of justice as well as universal humanitarian values,” reads the official statement from Kemenlu RI on Wednesday (1/4).

Indonesia also views the law as a serious violation of international law, particularly in the context of human rights and humanitarian law.

“The law constitutes a serious violation of international human rights law and humanitarian law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention, as well as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which guarantees the right to life and the right to a fair trial,” the Kemenlu RI statement added.

Furthermore, the Indonesian government urges Israel to immediately repeal the policy and cease all actions deemed contrary to international law.

“The Indonesian Government urges Israel to immediately repeal the law and halt all actions contrary to international law, and to ensure protection of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people, including detainees,” it continued.

Indonesia also calls on the international community to take concrete steps in response to the situation, particularly to ensure protection for the Palestinian people.

“Indonesia also calls on the international community, particularly the United Nations, to take firm steps to ensure accountability and protection for the Palestinian people. Indonesia reaffirms its full support for the Palestinian people’s struggle to achieve independence with East Jerusalem as its capital,” it concluded.

This statement once again affirms Indonesia’s consistent position in supporting the Palestinian struggle and promoting the enforcement of international law in resolving the protracted conflict in the region.
