Indonesia breaks duck in archery

KUALA LUMPUR (JP): Indonesia made amends for a poor run in the individual event of the archery competition at the 21st Southeast Asian Games by winning both the men's and women's team gold medals on Saturday.

The trio of Rusena Gelanteh, Gina Rahayu and Suci Dwi Megasari beat Malaysian opponents for the gold medal in the women's team with a record-breaking score of 232 points. The old record of 228 points was set in the 1997 SEA Games in Jakarta.

Later in the day, the trio of Syafrudin Mawi, Kuswantoro and Lockoneco completed a double, winning the men's team gold medal after beating Thailand 234-220 in the final, which was delayed due to strong winds and heavy rain.

Denny Trisyanto, the team's manager, said mental toughness was the key to the women's success.

"Our archers developed their mental resilience after beating Myanmar in the thrilling semifinal by just a one-point margin," he told The Jakarta Post over the phone from Johor Bahru. (nvn)
