JAKARTA (Agencies): Indonesia avenged its defeat against the
Philippines by winning 4-1 in the Asia Oceania Zone Group II
Davis Cup tie at Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila on
Sunday.
Davis Cup veteran Suwandi put away Indonesia's 4-1 victory by
beating Roland Ruel Jr. 6-4, 6-1.
Last April, the Philippines beat Indonesia 4-1 for the first
time during their encounter here and earned a final berth to
fight for a place in Group I.
Thailand was eventually promoted to Group I while the
Philippines remained in Group II.
Indonesian Davis Cup doubles Hendri Susilo Pramono and Edy
Kusdaryanto gave the country the 3-0 win and played a tough
battle before ousting the Filipino pair of Johny Arcilla and
Adelo Abadia 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (4/7), 5-7, 6-1.
Sunday's doubles matches followed the postponed game on
Saturday due to heavy rains. The Indonesian pair scored 6-4, 6-2,
5-7 on Saturday and won the decisive fifth set 6-1 on Sunday.
Arcilia gave the Philippines their only victory when he
defeated Febi Widhiyanto in the reversed singles, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.
Indonesia earlier opened up a 2-0 lead on Friday through Davis
Cup veteran Suwandi and Febi.
Suwandi had no trouble in beating the newcomer Arcilia in
straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, while Febi upset Abadia also in
straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
