Indonesia backs stronger ASEAN unity through parliamentary dialogue
Opening the forum, DPR Speaker Puan Maharani highlighted the ASEAN Way, which emphasizes dialogue, consensus, respect for sovereignty and non-interference among Southeast Asian nations.
Puan made the remarks in Jakarta on Wednesday, urging regional countries to strengthen ASEAN as multilateral institutions face growing challenges worldwide.
“ASEAN centrality is rooted in our willingness to strengthen unity, trust and regional cooperation based on the values enshrined in the ASEAN Way,” Puan said.
ASEAN must retain its central role in promoting political, economic, social and cultural relations among regional countries, she said.
The ASEAN Way is essential to strengthening the bloc’s credibility as a regional and global actor, she said.
Indonesia remains committed to ASEAN centrality and cohesion through dialogue, consensus, cooperation, respect for international law and multilateralism, she said.
“Indonesia will continue striving to ensure ASEAN remains relevant in a multipolar world, with centrality helping us navigate global geopolitical dynamics,” Puan added.
Her remarks reflected the meeting’s theme: “The Role of Parliament in Strengthening ASEAN Centrality in Navigating Complex Global Challenges.”
Puan said the DPR viewed parliaments as bridges connecting public aspirations with the direction of regional policies.
“We are part of the ASEAN community’s collective stance. Today’s meeting and dialogue contribute to building an inclusive, resilient and adaptive ASEAN community,” she said.
This year’s AIPA Caucus meeting is particularly significant because it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, Puan said.
“The ASEAN Way sustains ASEAN centrality and regional stability. We must strengthen these values and pass them on to future generations,” Puan said.
